Whiskey and Vikings, what's not to love? Experience both on a fascinating Viking Whiskey Cruise in Athlone on Saturday 4th August at 6pm where you'll discover the fascinating history about Viking hoards, high kings, big battles and saintly scholars... and journey through a unique selection of Irish whiskeys from the Midland's region!
On the tour, you will delve into the fascinating history of the Vikings from their arrival by river to Clonmacnoise in 842.
While you sail north up to Lough Ree, you will fully discover the centuries-old tradition of whiskey production in the Midlands and compare four contrasting Midlands Whiskeys to discern their unique characteristics.
Many islands on Lough Ree were once inhabited by monks and their whiskey treasures. In fact the world’s earliest documented account of ‘Uisce Beatha’ was recorded here in the Midlands in the Annals of Clonmacnoise in 1405. But like almost all the monastic establishments in Ireland, they were looted several times by the Vikings.
The tour runs on Saturdays and costs €39.50, with tickets available here
Private tours for 20+ people (amazing party idea!) are also available on request if you contact Midlands Whiskey Experiences directly for availability.
