RARE by Lidl, the highly anticipated dine in the dark experience by Lidl Ireland and Gary O'Hanlon, has opened its doors in Dublin this week.

Over 320 guests are expected to attend over the four-day dining period where diners will enjoy a delicious menu created by chef Gary O'Hanlon using Lidl’s Bord Bia Quality Assured Irish beef at the heart of each course. Tickets for the restaurant cost €15 and sold out in record time. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Lidl’s charity partner, Jigsaw, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health in Ireland.

Dining in the dark is said to enhance the senses, so guests should expect an experience where their senses of taste, smell and touch will be heightened. Throughout the meal, even the simple act of conversation will seem different, as guests adjust to sight deprivation and learn to focus on more than just the visual aspect of food.

Chef Gary O'Hanlon, culinary director at Baxter Storey and resident Chef on TV3’s ‘The Restaurant’, worked closely with Lidl to create the menu for the event. Made using ingredients exclusively from Lidl, the menu highlights Lidl Ireland's Bord Bia Quality Assured Irish beef from Liffey Meats based in Co. Cavan. The first two courses of the menu utilise the beef in different ways, firstly with a starter of wontons with braised housekeepers cut of beef with spiced tomato compote, pickled cucumber and freeze-dried yoghurt. Following this, guests are in for a real treat with a main course of salt-fried côte de boeuf with onion compote, mustard caviar and smoked tomato. For dessert, diners will enjoy rhubarb jelly with vanilla bean natural yoghurt and Deluxe gluten-free triple chocolate cookie. While the meal will be served in total darkness, Gary will be onsite each night to welcome guests and explain the process of dining in the dark at RARE by Lidl.
