Northern Ireland is not short on great food and drink and Belfast's Hill Street Hatch is a clever initiative that gives all that local talent a chance to shine.
Located in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter, Hill Street Hatch is part pop-up space, part hospitality incubator right in the heart of the city. It offers a ready-made space for entrepreneurs and hospitality startups to test and launch new concepts and ideas.
The innovative setup is the brainchild of Ryan Crown and Ema O’Kane. Crown founded Crown Creative, a bespoke creative agency now in Northern Ireland and New York, that has worked with the likes of The Dead Rabbit and Marriot Hotels, while O'Kane was marketing director for Brooklyn Gin.
The Hatch Summer Series sees various small businesses taking over the hatch this month, offering something exciting and different.
Aaron Heasley's Moon Gelato served up homemade gelato earlier in the month and next up it’s A Peculiar Tea. Running from 5 -8 August and 12 - 15 August, there’ll be delicious desserts crafted by Gemma Austin of the Great British Menu, and Lauren Shimmin.
The menu features a trio of waffles: pulled ham hock with piccalilli, poached egg, hollandaise and truffle; Beijing duck, plum, spring onion, cucumber and fried egg, and a vegan potato waffle with barbacoa jackfruit, guac, pico de gallo and aioli.
There will be two eclairs (lobster with bisque aioli and preserved lemon, and kobe beef with gruyere, pickles and mustard aioli) and a trio of desserts too.
Then from 19 - 22 August and 26 - 29 August it’s the turn of Kubo, a Filipino barbeque experience from Nalline Calvo. Make sure to check it out if you're in the area.
