Whiling away a few happy hours in a hotel may not be feasible at the moment but at least you can bring a little of the five-star experience home.
The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin has made its much-loved afternoon tea available for home delivery (or collection). If you live within a 10km radius of the Stephen’s Green hotel you can have a beautifully boxed selection of sweet and savoury treats delivered to your door.
It includes whiskey-cured smoked salmon on Guinness bread, cherry vine tomato and feta cheese on pumpkin bread, egg mayonnaise and cress on white bread and chicken and avocado on poppy seed roll. There are homemade buttermilk scones with clotted cream and jams too, as well as mini gingerbread cakes.
Then there are the pastries (and what afternoon tea is complete without pastries?). Created by Executive Chef Garry Hughes and his team, they include a chocolate and orange filled éclair, a banana and caramel cake with a chocolate cup, a vanilla and blueberry cheesecake and a Baileys and mint mousse.
If it’s a special occasion, you can opt for the Champagne afternoon tea – and if you want to go all-out you can rent the cutlery, linen and crockery (including the tiered serving stand) to recreate The Shelbourne experience at home. It’s also possible to add on extras such as the Exotic Woods candle, created for the hotel by Galway’s Cloon Keen (€35) or a bouquet of flower from The Florist at The Shelbourne (from €50).
The Classic afternoon tea for two for collection is €100, the Champagne afternoon tea is €170 and delivery of either is €10 extra. With the rental of the place settings etc, it's €170 for the Classic version and €240 for the Champagne option. You can book via the website.
