Tempted by a vegan lifestyle, but don't know where to start? Here are five simple, accessible lifestyle swaps you can make to get you on the right path.

With veganism up by a whopping 350 per cent in the last 10 years (according to research commissioned by The Vegan Society), more people today are making the choice to remove animal products from their diet. Here, we offer up some easy vegan substitutes that you can make today.

The switch: Cow’s milk for almond milk It’s high in calcium and magnesium and does not contain lactose or cholesterol. Bonus: the distinct nutty flavour makes it a great addition to your breakfast cereal, pancakes or baking.

The switch: Butter for coconut oil

The rich and creamy texture makes this oil the ideal substitute when baking or cooking. It contains good saturated fats (medium-chain triglycerides) which are good for the heart and lower cholesterol.

The switch: Cheese for tofu

Chunks of feta work well in a summer salad for a creamy, salty hit. For a change, try smoked tofu for its texture, flavour and a protein hit.

The switch: Pâté for avocado

Want something to spread on toast in the morning? Forget the meat or cheese-based spreads. Opt instead for a ripe avocado.

The switch: Eggs for baking powder

When baking, use one tablespoon of baking powder with one tablespoon of white wine vinegar for every egg in your recipe and you’ll still have perfectly fluffy cakes.
