Founded in 1966 by Tadgh O’Meara Senior and Danny Hughes, Kish Fish has been serving up delicious, sustainable seafood in Dublin for over 50 years.
Originally, the family business was operated out of the Smithfield fish market, but Kish Fish has expanded its outlets over the past 50 years. Now with premises on Bow Street, in Coolock and Avoca Dunboyne, as well as their smokehouse and store in Howth, Kish Fish has firmly established itself as one of Ireland's best fish suppliers.
We were lucky enough to use some of this supplier's gorgeous salmon as part of our starter at the recent 2019 FOOD AND WINE Awards, in association with Rémy Martin, so we know exactly how great this fish is. With Salmon Day 2019 taking place on October 9th, we thought it would be a great time to share some salmon tips and tricks, as well as a delicious recipe, from Kish Fish.
In 2018, Kish Fish launched Baily & Kish, their own line of smoked salmon that highlights traditional smoking methods. Created in the smokehouse at their premises on Howth Harbour, Baily & Kish is one of the finest smoked salmon products on the market right now as it is handmade by the experienced in-house smoking team who make that only the very best quality salmon is used.
Another bonus is associated with Kish Fish's Baily & Kish smoked salmon is that it is completely organic. The Organic Trust, a centre for excellence in organic inspection in Ireland, has surveyed the product to ensure it meets all of their guidelines, meaning you can trust that you're getting a good product.
Doing Their Bit
Seafood has been a contentious topic lately, as many of us wonder whether it is sustainable enough to continue eating. Thankfully, Kish Fish is committed to protecting the environment and ensuring that the fish they supply is as sustainable as possible.
As a member of Origin Green, the company states that they are "dedicated to meeting today’s needs while protecting tomorrow’s". To achieve this goal, Kish Fish has set itself some admirably high standards, including supplying only 100 per cent organic certified salmon from Irish waters, sea bass and sea bream from sustainable sources and cutting down on their dependency on single-use plastics.
As well as this, Kish Fish's fishing partners participate in Bord Iascaigh Mhara's (BIM) Fishing For Litter campaign. This initiative encourages fishermen to take ashore the litter they encounter at sea while fishing, which has resulted in over 220 tonnes of debris being removed from Irish waters since 2015.
Salmon Day 2019
Salmon Day is all about celebrating delicious, healthy fish. High in Omega-3 and polyunsaturated fats, salmon is extremely good for you and is the second most widely consumed fish in the United States, which is where the day of celebration originated.
This year Kish Fish is encouraging all fish lovers to show their support on Wednesday, October 9th and try some delicious salmon. To celebrate the day, Richie Duff, head chef at Kish Fish has given us a tasty smoked salmon and penne pasta dish to try out, so click here to cook see the recipe for yourself.
