Donegal's Caisleain Óir Hotel Named Best Workplace In Ireland

This family-owned hotel seriously impressed our judges.

Donegal's Caisleain Óir Hotel was named Best Workplace at the recent 2019 FOOD AND WINE Awards, in association with Rémy Martin.

The food and hospitality industry in Ireland is jam-packed with extremely talented individuals. While we know that great staff can hold up a business, we need to honour the businesses that support their staff too.

That's why this year, for the first time ever, we decided to introduce three new industry-based awards, which allowed people working in the food and hospitality industry to nominate those that they know are great to work for.

The hospitality industry is a tough one, with more than its share of long hours, pressures, and challenges. Most are in it for the love of the industry, a vocation rather than a mere job. Which is why your workplace is so important and can make all the difference. For chefs, the kitchen can, literally, be a second home so feeling valued and supported is essential. It’s the same with front of house roles and wait staff. Dealing with the public can be challenging sometimes and requires a high level of skill, knowledge and often superhuman tact. All the more so following the VAT increase in the industry and controversies around things like tipping.

A great workplace is one that supports its staff, adheres to good tipping practices, offers maternity leave, mentors new talent, and provides adequate staffing. The kind of place that makes you proud to work there - and reluctant to leave.

This year that award was given to Donegal’s Caisleáin Óir Hotel. The hotel, located in the village of Annagry, was founded by the McDevitt family in 1978 and since then, it has gone from strength to strength. A popular venue for locals and visitors to the area, it boasts the welcoming Jack’s Bar, serving great pub food, and a restaurant, Zita’s which has views over Annagry Bay and serves an a la carte menu which focuses on local produce. The judges felt that Caisleain Óir was a deserving winner because of how supportive a workplace it is. It is known for treating staff with courtesy and understanding and as a result, is home to many long-serving staff members.
