Assassination Custard on Dublin's Kevin Street was named Best Casual Dining at the 2019 FOOD AND WINE Awards in association with Rémy Martin.
This tiny family-run eatery has been making waves since it first opened on Kevin Street. Run by Ken Doherty and Gwen McGrath, Assassination Custard is a total hidden gem. Only open during the daytime - you can enjoy coffee and cake in the morning, before an array of small plates are served up at lunchtime - this restaurant only has a few seats, so you need to get down early if you want to try the delicious food.
Known for its chickpea fritters, the menu at Assassination Custard is one of the most local and seasonal in Dublin. Gwen and Ken regularly travel up to McNally's Farm in North Dublin to collect the produce that will feature on their menus. The pair are also known for scouting around Camden Street for inspiration too.
As the menu is so seasonal, it is always changing, so you never know what you'll get when you venture into Assassination Custard but, rest assured, it will always be delicious. Vegetables are usually at the forefront, cooked in a variety of exciting and delicious ways that will definitely excite you. For such unique fare, you'd be forgiven for expecting a hefty bill at the end of your meal but the prices at this tiny restaurant are extremely reasonable, so if you can get through the door, then you're guaranteed a tasty meal that won't break the bank.
Ken and Gwen weren't able to make it to the awards ceremony this year, so we caught up with Gwen recently to find out how she feels about this new award.
"We didn’t actually make it to the awards!!! We were really surprised that we won as we didn’t expect it at all. Ken saw it on his Instagram feed and we were really shocked. It made us a bit giddy. We saw someone collect our award in a photo. A friend messaged from the Shelbourne to tell us as well. Friends and family are thrilled and we can’t help but feel a bit chuffed. We had someone drop in our wine from O'Brien's today, so the celebration continues!"
