fEast Cork Returns In September

The popular food and drink festival is back.

The Cork region boasts an impressive food heritage and there will be plenty of opportunities to learn more about it at this year’s East Cork Food & Drink Festival.

The week-long event, known as fEast Cork, takes place from 1st to 8th September and organisers say it will be the biggest and best to date. Based in Midleton but encompassing the wider region, the festival week promises a mix of dinners, markets, demonstration and conversations, as well as foraging, mixology, producers and the heritage and storytelling the region - and the island of Ireland is known for.

Highlights to look out for include:

1. An evening of Indian Food & Film at The Ballymaloe Grainstore with Arun Kapil of Green Saffron.

2.Head chef Sunil Ghai (below) and his team from Dublin’s Pickle Restaurant will be making the trip to Cork for the festival. They’ll be joining Kevin Ahern in SAGE restaurant to create a lunch of North Indian vegetarian dishes. 3. Chef Brian Murray and his team from new arrival, The Glass Curtain in Cork will be collaborating with Midleton’s Ferrit & Lee for a special evening featuring a four-course menu, paired with wines from Liberty Wines

4. A Taste of Ballymaloe: Garden to Table Experience gives guests the chance to learn all about the famed Ballymaloe gardens before enjoying a three course lunch with the team.

5. A Ballycotton fEast with guest chef JP Walsh from Dublin’s One Pico, returning to his hometown to cook with the Pier26 kitchen team.  

6. For whiskey lovers, there’s a Powers Whiskey Masterclass in The Maple Leaf and there is a ‘Jameson, Ginger & Lime’ event which tells the story of the Jameson family and offers a tasting of four Jameson whiskeys. Gin fans can learn more about Bertha’s Revenge Gin with a distillery tour, chat and lunch in Ballyvolane House hosted by the distillers of the gin’s distillers, Antony Jackson and Justin Green.

The big finale on Sunday 8th is Market Day when Midleton will be transformed into a buzzing farmer’s market with life music, workshops, food stalls and entertainment. The new An Chistin tent will host live cookery demos, drinks masterclasses and an educational series called Appetite Talks hosted by Irish Times Food Writer Catherine Cleary (above). Some top names including Takashi Miyazaki from Michelin starred restaurant Ichigo Ichie  Fishy Fishy’s Martin Shanahan,  Jess Murphy of Kai, Ali Honour of Ali’s Kitchen, and The Tannery’s Paul Flynn will be making appearances in An Chistin. Early on Sunday afternoon, Paul Flynn and Martin Shanahan will man the SAGE kitchen for a for an Sunday lunch like no other.
