We love a homemade cocktail but sometimes they can be a little too complicated and require ingredients most of us don't have to hand.
One easy way to solve the problem is to order in. Catch Events has become Insta-famous in Ireland for its quarantini boxes, which arrive at your front door complete with ingredients and equipment to easily shake-up a drink. However, if you fancy trying to make a few of your own cocktails from scratch, Catch Event's Federico Riezzo has given us some tasty recipes. Easy to make and full of flavour, they're a brilliant way to use up some of the ingredients you have lingering in your presses like jam and marmalade.
"Here are a few drinks ideas that we can make at home with ingredients that we have in our fruit bowl or cupboard. Flavours can be swapped depending on what you have, which is where the fun element kicks in. Use a grapefruit instead of a mandarin, honey instead of jam, and so on.
I always try the drink before I add ice or shake a cocktail so you can adjust the flavours in your drink prior to the dilution process. We all have different taste buds and there is no sweet or sour written in stone, just what you think taste great.
Stick to the measurements in the recipes though as a drink with too much alcohol won't taste nice and can also lead to drinking more alcohol. Visit drinkaware.ie for more info."
Mandarin and black pepper Americano
Bitter sweet and with a zesty feel, this is the perfect aperitif. The pepper adds a lovely little layer to the drink, without overtaking. Easy to make and easy to drink.
- 30 ml Campari
- 30 ml Rose vermouth
- 80-100 ml of soda water
- 25 ml of mandarin juice
1. Squeeze the mandarins to get 25 ml of juice and pour it in the glass.
2. Add some freshly cracked black pepper - 3 or 4 turns of pepper mill will suffice.
3. Add all the ingredients, minus the soda, to a highball glass, fill to the top with ice and then top up with the soda. Stir gently.
4. Garnish with mandarin wedge and black pepper. Rosmarin or thyme can also work very well.
Raspberry jam Collins
This is a deliciously fruity and refreshing crowd pleaser. You can use any jam in lieu of the raspberry. If you are fond of bitter favours you can also swap tonic for the soda.
- 35 ml gin
- 25 ml raspberry jam
- 25 ml lemon juice
- Soda water
1. Dilute the jam with a dash of hot water ( 10ml should suffice) so to make it a little runny and let it cool for a few minutes.
2. Add all the ingredients, minus the soda, to a highball glass.
3. Taste with a straw to see if drink is balanced to your taste.
4. Add ice and top with soda. Gently stir and garnish with a lemon wheel.
Orange marmalade daiquiri
- 50ml spiced or light rum
- 35ml orange marmalade syrup
- 30 ml lime juice
1. Put your martini glass in the freezer then dilute the marmalade with a small dash of hot water (10ml should suffice) and let it cool for a few minutes.
2. Add all the ingredients to the shaker ( or a large jar with a lid) and taste with a straw to see if the drink is balanced. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds or so.
3. Get the martini glass out of the freezer and, using a strainer or with the lid of the jar, pour all the drink into the glass trying not to let the shards of ice falling in. Garnish with a wedge of orange
TASTING NOTES: Sweet and sour with a hint of bitterness from the marmalade and a hint of vanilla from the spiced rum. A classic drink revisited with cupboard essential in mind.
